Way of the Hunter 2 Ammo Types and Suppressors: Full Guide

Yes, Way of the Hunter 2 has suppressors, and they are real gear rather than a skin — the developer states that functional equipment such as suppressors can directly affect gameplay. Ammo works the same way: you buy cartridges from the Shop, slot them in Storage, then equip them per rifle, with one free default type per weapon and every alternate costing money. As of v1.0 with Update 1.1 (Version 212672, October 1, 2026) you carry two, four or six ammo sets depending on your backpack, and the free unlimited ammo sits permanently in Storage.

What Ammo Change Is (And What It Is Not)

Ammo Change appeared on the Experimental Branch inside Update 0.5.0 and shipped to the default branch on September 22, 2026. The developer calls it "mechanically similar to how ammo worked in the original Way of the Hunter", and gives the reason plainly: different ammunition types "offer different balances of penetration and cavity size", so you can adapt the round to the animal and the shot.

What it is not: no in-field crafting, no resupply mid-hunt, no published price list. The free-versus-paid split is per weapon rather than per caliber, and you may carry ammo no gun you brought uses. One progression detail catches new profiles: when the system was tested, the developer warned that "unlocking different calibers and ammunition types takes time", so not every caliber exists on day one.

How To Buy, Slot And Equip Ammo

The developer publishes the loadout as a five-step sequence:

  1. Open the Shop from the laptop in your lodge or the vicinity menu, and buy the ammo you want to bring.
  2. Check the carry limit first — 2 sets with no backpack, 4 with the default backpack, 6 with the big backpack.
  3. Open Storage and select the rifles or shotguns you are bringing.
  4. Add ammo to your ammo slots. Multiple slots can hold the same type.
  5. Equip the ammo to your rifles.

Update 0.5.0 then made it faster and harder to get wrong. It added an Auto-equip Ammunition action, moved the free unlimited ammo permanently into Storage so there is no claim trip to the Shop, and added compatibility colour-coding: an ammo slot turns red when it does not match your equipped weapon and green when it does.

Read the colours before you leave

Red means slot and gun do not match. A rifle with no ammo equipped still looks valid in the menu, so this catches the most common loadout mistake.

You cannot change ammo mid-hunt

Buying, slotting and equipping all happen before the hunt. There is no field menu for switching cartridges.

Free Default Ammo Versus Paid Alternates

The free round is not a generic starter ammo. It is one specific default type attached to each weapon, free for as long as you keep that weapon, while everything else in the caliber is a purchase. Update 0.5.0 also fixed free ammo for the "Jack Bear Hunter" requiring a higher level than the rifle itself.

No official ammo price list exists

Nine Rocks confirms alternate types are paid but publishes no cartridge prices in the FAQ, the patch notes or the store page. Any "it costs X credits" figure online is community-sourced and unverified.

Bows And Arrows: Where The Official Pages Disagree

Two official statements contradict each other here. Update 0.5.0's patch notes list "Added support for bows and crossbows" under the Ammo Change improvements, while the usage instructions in that same post — and still in the current FAQ — say bows and arrows have no alternate ammo and that these "will be add after full release", with 1.0 already out. We have not verified in-game which is true, so treat alternate arrow and bolt ammo as unconfirmed. Related open issue: the Shop shows no Accuracy stat for slugs, bolts and arrows.

Suppressors: Functional Gear, Not A Skin

The FAQ settles most arguments in one line: functional equipment such as suppressors can directly affect gameplay, while cosmetic customization is not currently expected to provide gameplay advantages. The Update 1 announcement says what the effect is — quieter shots that reduce animal alertness and prevent nearby herds from spooking — and the roadmap called suppressors one of the most requested gear additions.

2026-05-27 Update 2 Fixed suppressor-weapon compatibility listing; fixed SFX distortion on suppressed hits at 30-100 metres

2026-09-01 Update 0.4.1 Added the Bergara Mercury Ti30 for substantial sound reduction, sold as a real-world suppressor the same day

Two details guides skip: the Ti30 went on sale in the real world the same day it entered the game, and the Shop's suppressor numbers were wrong for months — 0.3.1 corrected the parameters, 0.4.0 corrected the Panther again.

Ammo Bugs Fixed In 1.0 And 1.1, And The Ones Still Open

Version 1.0 shipped September 29, 2026 (Version 212045); Update 1.1 followed on October 1 (Version 212672).

Issue Status
Ammo slot unavailable after clearing a type down to 0 bullets Fixed in 1.0
Ammo-change soft locks during the Turkey tutorial Fixed in 1.0
Primacy Carbon Special had no ammo in the Shop Fixed in 1.0
Merkel SxS Shotgun 45E reload broke after switching ammo Fixed in 1.0
Wrong stats for .375 H&H Magnum (Grande Strike), .45-70 Government (Nucleus Break), .270 Winchester (Nucleus Break), .300 Winchester Magnum (Nucleus Break Buffed) Fixed in 1.1
.308 Winchester (Grande Swift) recoil listed low; 12 Gauge (Rapid Buckshot) listed high Still open

The suffix is part of the product name — Grande Strike, Nucleus Break and Grande Swift are separate entries — and two still display recoil values the developer knows are wrong.

Loadouts That Work

With six slots at best, the official rules push you toward simple loadouts. Bring one rifle and fill several slots with its free default type — the same type can occupy multiple slots, so the cap limits sets carried, not rounds taken. Bring two guns, load both defaults first, then spend a slot or two on a paid alternate for your target species. Caliber-by-species picks are in best weapons and ammo, the roster in all animals. Fitting a suppressor before a premium round is the better first purchase: it changes how game reacts to you. The beginner guide covers first-hour order of operations, and update 1.1 patch notes list the rest.

FAQ

Does Way of the Hunter 2 have suppressors? Yes. Primacy Panther and Primacy Whisper Magnum arrived in Update 0.1.0 on April 28, 2026; the Bergara Mercury Ti30 joined in Update 0.4.1 on September 1.

How do you change ammo? Not in the field. Buy the round in the Shop, add it to an ammo slot in Storage, equip it to the rifle. Slots are colour-coded red or green so mismatches show.

How do you get more ammo? Your weapon's default type is unlimited in Storage, so you never run out. Alternates are bought from the Shop within the 2/4/6 set carry limit.

Are there suppressors for bows? Not in version 1.0. The FAQ lists a bow silencer and stabilizer as planned additions.
