Way of the Hunter 2 weapons guide for ammo change: which rifle and caliber per species, free default ammo vs paid alternates, real brand partners.
Way of the Hunter 2 Best Weapons and Ammo After the Ammo Change
There is no single best rifle in Way of the Hunter 2 any more. Update 0.5.0 shipped on September 22, 2026 and turned the weapon question into a rifle × ammo type × species decision, because the developer says different ammunition types "offer different balances of penetration and cavity size". Every gun now carries one free default ammo type plus purchasable alternates, so as of v1.0 (2026-10-03) the caliber still decides how hard a species hits, and the ammo loaded into that caliber decides how it performs.
What Update 0.5.0 Actually Changed
Ammo Change was first tested on the Experimental Branch inside Update 0.5.0, and the developer then shipped it to the default branch as one of the last major features added during Early Access. Nine Rocks describes the mechanic as working "mechanically similar to how ammo worked in the original Way of the Hunter", with each cartridge carrying its own penetration-versus-cavity trade-off so you can adapt to the animal, the situation and the shot you need.
Alongside the core system, 0.5.0 added an auto-equip ammunition action, made the free unlimited ammo permanently available in Storage instead of something you claim from the Shop, added support for bows and crossbows, fixed shotgun ammo switching, and added color-coded compatibility: ammo slots turn red when they do not match your equipped weapon and green when they do, weapon slots follow the same logic, and the HUD now names the ammo type you are carrying.
The same 0.5.0 announcement lists "Added support for bows and crossbows" as an Ammo Change improvement, while the usage instructions in that very post still say bows and arrows do not have alternate ammo yet and that these "will be add after full release". Both statements are official and they disagree. We have not verified in-game which is true at v1.0, so treat arrow loadouts as unconfirmed.
The Free Default Ammo Versus Paid Alternates
These are the official rules, unchanged between the FAQ and the 0.5.0 patch notes. The step-by-step menu walkthrough lives on our ammo and suppressors page.
| Rule | Official value |
|---|---|
| Where you buy ammo | Shop, via the laptop in your lodge or the vicinity menu |
| Ammo sets with no backpack | 2 |
| Ammo sets with the default backpack | 4 |
| Ammo sets with the big backpack | 6 |
| Free ammo per weapon | Exactly one ammo type is default and free |
| Paid ammo | Every alternate ammo type for that caliber |
| Slots | Ammo can fill multiple slots, and the same type can occupy several slots |
| Storage default ammo | Unlimited, always available, no Shop trip needed |
| Compatibility | You can carry ammo that no weapon you brought uses |
The carry cap is small (2/4/6 sets) and it counts every set you take, not every caliber. Two of six slots on a big backpack going to a premium round is a real trade against a backup caliber.
The developer confirms alternates are paid but publishes no prices for cartridges anywhere on the FAQ, the patch notes or the store page. The only prices the game charges publicly are the DLC ones. Any specific "costs X credits" figure you see online is community-sourced, and we have not verified one.
Calibers And The Firearms That Shoot Them
Three caliber pairings are confirmed by official announcements and patch notes: the CVA Cascade LRX is a .270 Win bolt-action, the Christensen Arms Evoke is a .243 Win, and the Merkel Helix Speedster is a .30-06 Springfield bolt-action added in 0.5.0. Everything else comes from Glenn Frazee's rifle selector, the only structured caliber chart in the wild, which states its data is current as of Early Access build v0.2.0.195528 from May 2026. Official rows are marked.
| Caliber | Firearm | Source |
|---|---|---|
| .22 LR | Vanhoutte Stinger, Strasser RS 700-22 | Third-party |
| .270 Win | Primacy 7700 (level 2) | Third-party |
| .270 Win | CVA Cascade LRX | Official |
| .243 Win | Christensen Arms Evoke | Official, Update 0.3.2 |
| .308 Win | Primacy Classic Hunter MK II | Third-party |
| 6.5x55mm Swedish Mauser | Primacy Advance DK94 | Third-party |
| 6.5mm Creedmoor | Bergara B14 HMR | Third-party |
| .30-06 Springfield | Primacy Classic 1907 (level 9) | Third-party |
| .30-06 Springfield | Merkel Helix Speedster | Official, Update 0.5.0 |
| .300 Win Mag | Primacy Carbon Special (level 27) | Third-party |
| .375 H&H Mag | Primacy Safari Elite | Third-party |
| .338 Lapua Mag | Primacy Advance Shift | Third-party |
| .45-70 Government | Jack Bear Hunter (level 18) | Third-party |
| 12 / 16 / 20 ga slug | Primacy Hunter, Primacy Rasenbaum, Primacy Morning Silence, Bonser & Klein Standard | Third-party |
That chart is fine for orientation and wrong for decisions today: it predates the 0.3.1 flesh-damage rework, the 0.4.0 lethal-damage rebalance and Ammo Change itself, so its energy figures describe a damage model the game no longer uses.
Which Rifle And Ammo For Which Species
This is where the honest answer is uncomfortable: the developer publishes no per-species recommended energy table. What is published are tier statements and one species-specific organ. Full roster with the two unrevealed species is on the all animals page.
| Species group | What official sources say | Caliber direction |
|---|---|---|
| Western moose, Wood bison, Rocky Mountain elk | Update 0.4.0 rebalanced lethal damage "so high-energy calibers can now more reliably bring down animals" | Top energy tier you can carry |
| Common hippopotamus, Cape buffalo, Southern lion | The only three species with implemented charging and aggressive reactions | Maximum energy, plus a backup gun |
| Eastern wild turkey, Mallard, White-tailed ptarmigan, Southern yellow-billed duck | Update 0.4.0 added air sacs as a dedicated organ for birds, plus shotgun choke and a pellet-spread readout on the Claim screen | Slugs and shotguns |
| Rocky Mountain mule deer, Northern white-tailed deer | Update 0.3.1 uses the phrase "optimal caliber" without listing values | Mid tier |
| Pronghorn, Dall sheep, Central European wild boar | No published ammo guidance | Mid to high, unverified |
| Hare, wolverine, grey wolf, Spotted hyena, Cape honey badger | No published ammo guidance | Light to mid, unverified |
Two mechanics decide the rest. Flesh damage now takes extra damage from the projectile's own impact, which the developer warns can produce "overly favorable hunt ratings" — and the trophy rating system is being reworked anyway, so read the trophies and ratings page before optimising for a score. For the three charging species, treat this as a survival problem, not a caliber problem; the Kilimaya guide covers positioning there.

The Real Brand Partners Behind The Gear
The launch announcement credits "authentic gear from more than ten real-world partners" and then names thirteen: Bergara, Bushnell, Christensen Arms, CVA, DDoptics, Integrix, Leupold, Merkel, MDT, Primos, Stone Glacier, Strasser and ZEISS.
| Partner | Confirmed in-game gear |
|---|---|
| Christensen Arms | Evoke .243 Win rifle (Update 0.3.2) |
| CVA | Cascade LRX .270 Win bolt-action |
| Merkel | Helix Speedster .30-06 Springfield bolt-action (0.5.0), SxS Shotgun 45E, plus one of the two shotguns added in 0.4.0 |
| ZEISS | Conquest HDX 15x56, V8 1.8-14x50, V8 2.8-20x56, DTC 3/25 and DTC 3/38 thermal clip-ons |
| Strasser | RS 700-22, RS14 WotH Edition |
| Bergara | Named as a launch partner; a B14 HMR (6.5 Creedmoor) appears in the third-party firearm roster |
| Bushnell, DDoptics, Integrix, Leupold, MDT, Primos, Stone Glacier | Named as partners at launch; specific items not itemised in the launch post |
Buffden also appears in the 1.1 known-issues list through the Apex Predator crossbow, but it is not in the launch partner list — a reminder that the partner roster and the gear roster are not the same set. The developer says each partnership typically takes a year or more from first contact to reveal, and muzzleloaders, muzzle brakes, a bow silencer and a bow stabilizer are all still planned.
The developer states functional equipment such as suppressors can directly affect gameplay, while cosmetic customization is not currently expected to give any gameplay advantage. The Christensen Arms Evoke is marketed as suppressor-ready, and Update 0.3.1 had to fix incorrect suppressor parameters in the Shop and Encyclopedia.
Ammo Bugs At Launch And What Patch 1.1 Fixed
Version 1.0 shipped September 29, 2026 as Version 212045, and Update 1.1 followed on October 1 as Version 212672. The ammo-specific work is worth reading as a timeline, because it shows which ammo numbers you can trust right now. Full list in our update 1.1 patch notes page.
| Issue | Status as of v1.0 |
|---|---|
| Ammo slot unavailable after clearing a type down to 0 bullets | Fixed in 1.0 |
| Ammo-change soft locks during the turkey tutorial section | Fixed in 1.0 |
| Primacy Carbon Special had no ammo available in the Shop | Fixed in 1.0 |
| Merkel SxS Shotgun 45E reload broke after switching ammo | Fixed in 1.0 |
| Wrong ammo stats for .375 H&H Magnum (Grande Strike), .45-70 Government (Nucleus Break), .270 Winchester (Nucleus Break), .300 Winchester Magnum (Nucleus Break Buffed) | Fixed in 1.1 |
| .308 Winchester (Grande Swift) recoil listed lower than actual | Open in the known-issues list |
| 12 Gauge (Rapid Buckshot) recoil listed higher than actual | Open in the known-issues list |
| No Accuracy stat in Shop or Storage for slugs, bolts and arrows | Open in the known-issues list |
Those last three lines are the practical takeaway. The in-game suffix is part of the product name, so Grande Strike, Nucleus Break, Nucleus Break Buffed, Grande Swift and Rapid Buckshot are distinct ammo entries, not flavour text, and two of them still display recoil values the developer knows are wrong.
FAQ
What is the best rifle in Way of the Hunter 2? There is no single answer at v1.0. The highest-energy caliber you can carry is what the developer points at for large animals, and the free default ammo for that rifle is free forever, so start there and only buy an alternate when you have a specific species and range in mind.
Do I have to buy ammo? No. Your default unlimited ammo lives in Storage permanently and does not need to be claimed from the Shop. Only alternate ammo types cost money.
How many ammo types can I carry? Two sets with no backpack, four with the default backpack, six with the big backpack. The same type can occupy more than one slot.
Can I change ammo in the field? No. You buy and equip ammo from the Shop and Storage before a hunt, which is why the loadout screen matters more after Update 0.5.0 than it did before.
Is ammo change in the original Way of the Hunter too? Yes. Nine Rocks says the system is mechanically similar to how ammo worked in the first game, and Steam listed the original at $7.49 (75% off $29.99) when this page was checked on October 3, 2026, so it is a cheap way to compare the two damage models.
Will the ammo values change again? Likely. The developer says ballistics and damage are close to finished but small balance adjustments to organ damage, flesh damage and meat degradation are still possible, and post-launch patch cadence is explicitly higher than normal.
